It is with profound sadness that the world says goodbye to Ray Dejon, a beloved and iconic figure in entertainment and community outreach, who has passed away.
A Brooklyn native through and through, Ray’s legacy reaches far beyond the boroughs of New York, touching lives across the nation and around the globe as a gifted host, comedian, and motivational speaker.
Ray Dejon was a multi-talented entertainer and humanitarian whose influence spanned over 18 years in the industry. A graduate of Erasmus Hall High School and the College for Human Services, he combined street smarts with a formal education to forge a unique voice—one that resonated with audiences of all backgrounds.
Ray’s early work in comedy and hosting blossomed into a remarkable career that spanned television, live shows, and community outreach. Perhaps best known as one of the original hosts of Dance Traxx USA and a longtime host of the legendary Video Music Box, Ray’s charisma and authenticity made him a standout in the world of music and entertainment.
Over the years, he interviewed countless stars, including Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Kevin Hart, Jamie Foxx, Sean “Puffy” Combs, and Carmelo Anthony, always bringing warmth, humor, and insight to his conversations. He also graced the stage at Amateur Night at The Apollo Theater, delighting audiences with his energy and presence.
Ray’s passion for entertainment extended beyond performance. As President and Founder of DeJon Entertainment LLC, he pioneered Stand-Up Comedy @ The Movies, a national touring comedy show that debuted in 2001.
His entrepreneurial spirit led him to open the first Black-owned comedy club in Brooklyn, Laffaholics Comedy Club, a vital cultural space that amplified underrepresented voices in comedy.
His contributions continued at Resorts World Casino in Queens, where he brought together top-tier acts in comedy and music, from Boyz II Men and Sinbad to Naughty by Nature and Tamar Braxton.
But Ray Dejon’s greatest impact may be the work he did behind the spotlight. Holding a degree in human services and international therapist credentials, he dedicated significant time to empowering youth across the tri-state area.
He spoke candidly to young people about domestic violence, peer pressure, substance abuse, and HIV/AIDS awareness. His mission was not just to entertain, but to educate, uplift, and inspire.
Through his partnership with Eastern Light Getaways, Ray expanded his brand further, organizing weekend events filled with music and laughter, featuring artists like Rick Ross and K. Michelle.
Whether he was behind a mic or on a school stage speaking to teens, Ray brought the same dedication, honesty, and heart. His passing leaves a tremendous void in the world of entertainment and in the communities he tirelessly served.
As a comedian, he made people laugh; as a host, he brought stories to life; and as a speaker, he healed and inspired. The heartfelt tribute shared by a colleague captures the grief felt by many:
“I am truly disheartened to have heard and confirmed with his family that my colleague, bro from the hood, and one of the original hosts of Dance Traxx USA passed away… RIP Funnyman… Ray Dejon.”
Ray Dejon was more than just an entertainer—he was a bridge between cultures, generations, and communities. His humor, his voice, and his mission to make the world a better place will never be forgotten. Brooklyn, and the world, mourns the loss of one of its finest.
