SAN ANTONIO, TX (July 14, 2025) — Authorities have formally charged 49-year-old Lorenzo Aleman with capital murder following a deadly confrontation Sunday night in the parking lot of an H-E-B store on South New Braunfels Street.

The victims were identified as 41-year-old Betty Guzman, also known as Betty Murillo, Aleman’s ex-wife, and an unidentified 31-year-old man believed to be her romantic partner.

The violence erupted just before 11:00 p.m., when Aleman reportedly arranged a meetup with his ex-wife and the man outside the popular grocery store. Witnesses told investigators that the encounter quickly devolved into a heated argument, with Aleman allegedly confronting the pair over their relationship.

Moments later, Aleman allegedly retrieved a handgun and opened fire, striking both victims multiple times in front of stunned onlookers. The scene quickly turned chaotic, with shoppers and employees fleeing for cover as emergency dispatchers flooded the airwaves with calls reporting gunshots.

Emergency medical services and San Antonio Police arrived minutes later to find both Guzman and the man unresponsive with critical gunshot wounds. Despite rapid intervention, both were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were recovered near the front of the parking lot, where investigators set up a large perimeter for forensic processing.

Detectives say Guzman had previously expressed concerns about her safety, though it remains unclear whether any protective orders were in place at the time of the shooting.

Aleman fled in a white SUV, sparking a citywide manhunt. He was apprehended early Monday morning without incident and has since been booked into Bexar County Jail. Prosecutors confirmed he faces two counts of capital murder, which could result in a life sentence or the death penalty if convicted.

At a press briefing, Police Chief William McManus condemned the violence, calling the incident “a heartbreaking example of unresolved domestic tensions escalating to tragedy.”

Friends of Guzman have described her as a dedicated mother and hardworking woman who had recently begun rebuilding her life after a difficult separation. Her death has sparked conversations about domestic violence, jealousy-fueled crimes, and the need for early intervention in volatile relationships.
